What artificial grass installation actually involves
Artificial grass is a synthetic turf system, not a carpet you roll out. A proper installation removes the existing lawn and topsoil, builds a compacted stone sub-base with the right falls for water to escape, fixes a solid perimeter edge, then joins and secures the grass so seams stay invisible and edges stay put. Everything that decides how the lawn looks in year five happens before the grass ever comes off the roll.
We supply and fit only; we do not sell grass over the counter for you to lay yourself. That means we control the specification end to end: the pile you choose, the base under it, the edging holding it, and the drainage taking water away. If something needs putting right, there is one team to call.
You can see and feel the options before deciding. We bring samples out to the site visit so you can compare pile heights, colour blends and how each one feels underfoot, next to your own fence, patio and light levels rather than under showroom lighting.

What happens when the base is wrong
Badly installed artificial grass rarely fails on day one. It fails in the second and third winter. An under-compacted sub-base settles unevenly, so dips appear where children run and furniture sits. Too little fall or no drainage layer, and rainwater sits under the grass, smells, and turns the sub-base into soft mush. Skimped edging lets the perimeter lift and curl, which is both a trip hazard and the point where weeds get in.
The repairs cost more than the original job. Correcting a settled lawn means lifting the grass, re-digging the base and re-laying, often with grass that is now creased, stretched or short of offcuts for a clean join. Laying straight onto old topsoil or existing paving may look fine for a season, but it is not repairable in place.
There is a wider cost too. A garden you avoid because it is muddy for eight months of the year is a room of the house you are not using, and a selling point a buyer will discount.

In detail
Grass types, base build-ups and where each one suits
Two gardens the same size can need very different specifications. These are the variables we set at the quote stage.
Choosing a pile for how you use the garden
Shorter, denser piles hold their shape under constant traffic, which suits dog runs, family lawns and nursery play areas. Longer piles look softer and more natural in a low-traffic front garden or a display area, but they flatten faster where people walk the same line every day.
Colour matters as much as height. Multi-tone blends with a brown thatch layer read as real grass in daylight; single-tone bright greens tend to look synthetic, particularly in the flat light we get for much of the year. We bring samples out so you can hold them against your fence and paving instead of guessing from a photo.
Sub-base, membrane and edging
The build-up is excavation, compacted stone sub-base, a finer levelling layer, membrane and grass. Depth is set by ground conditions and what the lawn will carry, clay and waterlogged plots need more preparation than a free-draining plot. Compaction is done in layers, because a single deep layer never consolidates properly no matter how long it is rolled.
The perimeter is the detail most installations get wrong. A grass edge needs something solid to be fixed to along its whole length, whether that is a fixed edging system, existing paving or a wall. Get it right and the lawn keeps a crisp line for years; get it wrong and the edges lift within a couple of seasons.
Drainage on Bolton clay
Much of Bolton and the towns around it sit on heavy clay that holds water. Artificial grass is permeable, so water passes through the backing, but it then has to go somewhere. Falls are set away from the house and any outbuildings, and where a garden already collects water we deal with it as part of the groundwork rather than laying grass over the problem.

How much does artificial grass cost in Bolton?

Yes. We use hard-wearing piles for dog owners and build a free-draining base underneath, so urine and rainwater pass through instead of sitting in the pile. Rinsing the area a dog favours is all the extra upkeep it needs.
Can artificial grass be laid on a slope or over an existing patio?
Sloping gardens are common and we set levels and falls as part of the groundwork. We do not lay grass straight onto existing surfaces as a shortcut; we build a proper base, because that is what the guarantee covers.
Does it drain, and will it flood in heavy rain?
